                      Chandni chowk literally means moonlight square and it was given this name because initially a charming canal flowed through the market and at the centre of the bazaar, the canal broadened to form an octagonal pool. On some nights the moonlight reflected in the central pool earning it the name”Chandni Chowk” (Moonlight Square). It was built in 1650 by Jahanara daughter of Shah Jahan, Stretched for more than a kilometre and 120 ft wide and was a spectacle to behold. Today, Chandni chowk is a great place to feel the Old town vibe and get amazed by its sights, sounds and smells.

                      Location:

                      Chandni chowk located in the center of Old Delhi. Nearest metro station is Chandni chowk on yellow line and Red fort on the Heritage line.

                      Places to visit in Chandni Chowk

                      Dariba Kalan: An exquisite 350 years Old Jewellery street hub of jewels and ornaments. Almost every shop in the lane is 200 years old and apart from Jewellery it is also famous for oil based perfumes.

                      Kinari Bazaar (Wedding market): Popularly known as wedding market lane and the street is full of colors and glitter. Often observed the street changes its color according to the festivities in the city.

                      Nau Ghara: Means Nine houses, this is the lane located in Kinari Bazaar. Famous for 18th century colourful mansions belongs to the Jain families.

                      Paranthewali Gali (Famous Street for Stuffed bread): It is here the real magic happens to the foodies. The moment you enter the street the smell of the spices will hit your nose, and oil smoke from the small shops will make you mouth water.

                      Gurdwara Sis Ganj Saheb (Sikh Temple): It is one of the nine historical sikh; temples in Delhi. Built on the spot where the 9th Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bhadur was beheaded by Emperor Aurangzeb in 1675.

                      Jain temple:

                      Bird Hospital:  In the Jain temple you will find this unique hospital taking care of the injured birds.

                      Mirza Galib Ki haveli: Museum of the popular poet of 19th century

                      Khari Bawri: Asia’s largest Spice market where you can get close and know about Indian spices and learn how to use them to make your own cooked next meal.

                      Travel Tip

                      The area is overwhelming and often crowded

                      Try to visit in the morning at the opening hours of the shop

                      Dress modestly which means cover your body fully

                      Wear comfortable shoes

                      Take extra care of your belongings

                      Take a guided tour for best experience

                      Chandni chowk closed on Mondays

                      Cahandni chowk is also a great place to try local food from Mughali food to best street food everything is available here.
